Type 1 – Specialist with management responsibilities – The person was an individual specialist who gets promoted to a line manager role and given a team of people to manage while continuing to do their role as specialist. This means they may only be able to dedicate 1 day a week to the responsibilities of managing their team as they must do their day job of being a specialist.
Type 2 – A manager is 100% dedicated to people management. This means that all they do is focus on their team with possibly some internal business process improvement projects on the side but no specialist workload.
I believe that it is tougher to be type 1 as they also can have a large non-management workload. This could mean that they may not be able to dedicate the time and energy they want to their team members.
Type 2 is where the manager is a person that sees managing people as a calling and not just a job, As they must dedicate all their time and energy to their team.
It can be hard to choose which manager type is better as it all depends on what the team member wants and needs from their manager and these wants and needs can change throughout a person’s career.
