I heard an interview where an executive outlined what it was like to work in a toxic culture. I am sharing their insights so if you see or experience any of the following then you are in the wrong company and that where you are is not normal –
Failure is rewarded and success is pushed out.
Extremely bureaucratic, creating and maintaining processes is more important than generating income or improving efficiency or effectiveness of people, processes, products or systems.
Non-existent people management – team managers spend 20 minutes every 2 months with a team member. There are no team meetings, no departmental or cross organisation meetings, this means that no one is clear on the direction or aims ad objectives of the company.
No personal development of employees as management do not understand the sector the company operates, and they do not know what skills, attitude and qualifications that are needed in their team.
Leadership set low targets and then fail to achieve them.
No communication or environment of collaboration.
Toxic culture as bullying and asehles are rewarded and anyone who complains is pushed out.
For every piece of work it seems like they have never done it before, as there is no knowledge sharing or standard approach to anything. Therefore, once a piece of work is done the knowledge required to deliver it again needs to be re-learnt if the same work is to be done again.
In conclusion I hope that you do not work in this kind of organisation. It is unlikely that this kind of organisation can stay in business for long so always be aware of where you are working and how you are treated.
