Questions to ask yourself

Is what you are worrying about in your control?

If you have no control or influence over it then how much energy will you give to it?

When can you react or do something about what is worrying you?

Can you do anything to change the situation?

Can you materially change the person that is causing you to spend time, energy and happiness thinking about them?

Answers to think about

If you cannot fix something now and it is not in your control then you do not need to spend time, energy and happiness thinking about it.

If you cannot change the person then you do not need to spend time, energy and happiness thinking about it.

Accept the reality and focus on what you can control.

People do not change or only they can change themselves. People do not change for external reasons or for other people.

Ask yourself how much I can really expect that person / organisation to change? Answer is likely to be zero.

Try to influence do not try and convince people as there can be limited success in trying to use reasoning to try and change someone’s mind

How does this apply to project management?

Life as a PM is tough and it can be thankless and lonely.

So it is important to focus energy on what the PM can influence and control.

The PM must set the culture and energy of the project but not at the expense of their own sanity.
