Why we blow it when we are tired or hungry

Over a series of posts I will summarize what I learnt from the excellent book by Dan Ariely “The honest truth about dishonesty” and talk about how the lessons apply to project management. It is an excellent book and one that I highly recommend that you buy.
I discovered Dan Ariely through the enlightening “Behavioural Economics” course on edx.

The WHEN is very important to take into account when you are seeking a decision from someone.

You want to meet with people about important decisions when they are fresh. So not first thing in the morning or after lunch.

If you can – bring snacks to the meeting for your audience. As a hungry audience can bea restless and hostile.

It is normal to make unhealthy and bad decisions when tired, under pressure or mentally overloaded. So I try and avoid making decisions when I am not physically at my best.

How does this apply to project management?

It is important to take into account the time of day and the schedule of your audience, so you can plan appropriately. If I need creative problem solving from the audience then this is best after everyone’s morning coffee but not to close to lunch or after the mid-afternoon dip.

For a general update this can be done when the audience may have low energy as all they are receiving is information, they do not necessarily have to do anything in the moment.

The challenge with the WHEN is especially hard when working internationally across multiple time zones. What could be best for Europe may be bad for APAC and the Americas.
